Set of 4 Northern Italian School oil on panel depicting the Four Apostles (Evangelists) of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John complete with their symbols
Saint Mathew symbolised with a winged putto (angel) representing Jesus’s incarnation
Saint Mark symbolised with a Lion which represents Jesus’s Resurrection
Saint Luke symbolised with an Ox or a Bull representing Jesus’s Sacrifice
Saint John symbolised with an Eagle which represents Jesus’s Ascension
Condition
Original as found condition. The gesso and painted frames have chips and scuffs in line with age, with a beautiful gilded inner frame. Some historic woodworm holes and splits and cracks in the wood, but structurally solid
