Late 16th century Italian school oil on a wood panel painting of The Madonna with Christ Child and the infant St. John the Baptist. Mount Vesuvius is erupting in the background. This painting was part of the collection of Fred B. Snite Sr of the Snite Museum of Art at Notre Dame College. Some experts attribute this work to the Italian Gothic master Lorenzo d’Alessandro (1455 – 1503). However, others suggest that it was later painted by Niccolo Betti (1550 – 1617). It has been mounted on a hand-painted gray wood panel and framed with a wood gold gilded finish molding.
