A wonderful early walnut chest, French 16th century, with a central panel of Gothic tracery. The only other decoration are simple raised molding square diamonds one the front and sides. I love the simplicity of this piece, showing the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance. Carved of walnut with a lovely honey patina, the top showing burns from candles, dents and stains of use acquired over the ages giving this piece so much character.
This cassone just resonates with an aura of all the eras it has lived through. A great compliment to any interior, useful for storage, at the foot of the bed or the perfect size as a unique coffee table.
46 inches wide, 17.5 high 21 deep
Provenance: Luigi Pellettieri, New York City, collector and dealer of early European works of art and furniture.
