A large green ground Venetian funerary board, this would of hugged the top hull of a gondola hence the boards convex construction. And obviously this would of been used for funeral procession down the Venetian “rio’s”. The piece is hand painted with the universal memento mori symbol of death, the skull and cross bones. Two flowing ribbons terminate to a acanthus leaf symbolizing immortality and rebirth.
The soft wood board has a gesso skin, there is consistent ware and loss to the paintwork but the remaining sections are very much stabile.
The piece is in two sections and simply hangs on three modern brass hooks, the two sections join with a modern bracket. Surprisingly the piece is light and easily manoeuvrable
