Great 17th century painting attributable to the Venetian painter Pietro Damini (1592-1631), lacking authenticity. Great oil artwork on canvas depicting a biblical episode taken from the book of Exodus: while Moses is leading the people of Israel, freed from slavery in Egypt, in the desert toward the promised land, his people complain about the thirst. He then asks for help from God who orders him to go to a mountain and strike a rock with his rod, from which water miraculously flows. In our painting the miracle has already happened and multitudes rush with jugs or prostrate themselves before the water flowing at their feet. The composition is animated with characters quenching their thirst and crowding around Moses and the miraculous water. A painting with great dynamism and notable pictorial quality, evident in particular in the refined chromatic harmonies, in the transparencies of the clothes and in the characterization of each individual character. Beautiful antique non-coeval frame in carved and painted wood, with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some small points. Overall in excellent state of preservation. Sight size H 140 x W 118.5 cm.
