Antique painting from the Caravaggio school of the 17th century. Oil artwork on canvas depicting a fascinating subject, card players. For the tavern setting it recalls the Flemish authors but as a genre scene it has several points in common with Caravaggio’s cheaters as we also find a scam in this composition. In fact, a naive young man is playing his cards and a character on the left seems to be suggesting them to his friends. Painting of notable pictorial quality, underlining the realism of the faces and the masterful use of the chiaroscuro technique to create plasticity, volume and depth. The drapery is wonderful, the naturalistic details are meticulous and moving. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some places (see photo). Overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 106.5 x W 133.5 cm.
