19th Century English Writing Desk with Chinoiserie

English desk with Chinoiseries, ff. S.XVIII – pp. S.XIX – England

Spectacular English travel and golden wood scritorio with drawers inside, ornate with Chinoiseries on all fronts of its exterior with figures in palatial environments surrounded by flowers, birds and taoist symbols.

Once open, the surface destined for writing is extended, with several compartments for feathers, ink and accessories. Also in the inside, an exquisite collection of old currencies is preserved, attached to the upper part, a faithful reflection of the passion of its previous owner by the numerical collecting, which provides added value. Closed presents a rectangular box form, of small dimensions, easily transportable and decorative in itself. The desktop is based on a base with chippendale style legs, which allows you to enjoy the piece as one more furniture.

Lacquer furniture and decorated with gold Chineseries are an English prototype. His export to Spain, Portugal, Italy and Germany gave rise to regional variants. Both in Europe and in America the taste for Asian objects was related to a certain search for ostentation and prestige. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the most exported lacas were the Japanese, being from 1700 the Chinese who went on to dominate the international market. In the 18th century, the circulation of Asian lacquers increases in much of Europe. They used to be done to decorate rooms attending to the demand of the nobility.

It does not retain the lock, and presents some lacquer fouls that could be restored and that do not affect the general vision of the set, typical of its use and seniority. It is a magnificent piece for any lover of Chinese writing and art.
