The body of the chimneypiece is carved from solid Belgium Black finished in a high polish, punctuated by tapering Doric columns that are unpolished, and the opening framed by Irish Kilkenny Black Marble, with white fossil markings. The height of the flanking columns is accentuated by upholding the shelf above the connecting frieze, which is set at a lower level. Centred by a stylized central tablet, the whole on square plinth blocks.
