The elegant vase of beautiful proportions. Set upon a short, round foot, the pear shaped body supports a long, narrow neck surmounted by a garlic head mouth. A playful chilong, with a thin, lithe body and bifurcated tail, wraps himself around the neck. His head is wonderfully dragon like, with a full mane of flaming hair and a long, flowing beard. He carries a long sprig of lingzhi, the fungus of immortality, in his mouth.
The bronze of very attractive reddish brown color.
Made for the scholar’s desk or studio, this lovely vase would most likely have been used as a small flower vase.
The chilong is a mythical beast often mistaken for a dragon. Whit its serpentine body and dragon-like head, it is easy to confuse the two. However, chilong never have horns, their bodies are slimmer, and their tails are usually split.
