A delicate and exquisite Chinese Ming Dynasty silver “Nine Phoenix Coronet”. The coronet, or crown, features a headband crafted as a band of scrolling clouds and was originally treated with a gold wash. Separately cast silver phoenixes with outstretched wings and a large tail plume are attached to the headband. Each phoenix holds a large chime suspended from a delicate chain held in its beak. Each large chime with a further set of nine chimes, arranged in groups of three, joined by separate hanging chains.
This type of headdress was reserved only for the highest ranking concubines of imperial court, with the number of phoenixes (nine being the maximum) designating their rank – the more phoenixes on the crown, the higher her rank.
