A very fine pair antique Chinese Kangxi porcelain famille verte Buddhist Lion joss stick holders dating between 1662 and 1722. The dogs sit raised on a rectangular plinth or altar with shaped base and sides and have their heads turned to one side with one paw raised and resting on a ball. The dogs have been hand painted in the famille verte palette with floral designs painted against a patterned ground to the plinth with the dogs applied with harness like decoration in relief and both holding ribbons in their open mouths and showing teeth. The figures are painted in tones of green, blue, brown and yellow and both wear collars with bells and hanging bibs. Both have a raised joss stick holder to the back corner. The bases are unglazed and are typically not marked.
