A rather odd pair of hardwood carved furniture feet from South Tyrolean region Italy, possibly from a ecclesiastical piece like a chest.
They remind me of the early imagery of the Sea Monk from the natural history almanacs from the mid-16th century onward by the likes of Johannes Sluperius, 1572
Nevertheless very odd and macabre looking creatures, some evidence of the original painted decoration.
Some areas of old woodworm that has long departed, but nothing is flaky or loose.
