The Goryeo bronze basin of shallow bowl form, set on a short and wide ring foot, with straight walls, an everted mouth, and rolled edge rim. The basin plain, save for a pair of simple lines that circumscribe the mid-section of the basin, typical of Goryeo bronze decoration. The bronze with a gorgeous and complex overall patina of textured green malachite over red cuprite.
The basin has an almost austere feel to it, with its simple decoration, elegant proportions, and incredible patina.
Most likely used in a ritual setting, this bowl would originally have been used to hold water, and may have been used in washing or purification ceremonies.
Goryeo bronze vessels are prized for their simple, yet elegant forms that often develop stunning and complex patinas from burial. Major institutions around the world hold collections of Goryeo bronzes.
