Porphyry block – 70.4 kg
Porphyry is a purple stone with white flecks, renowned for its great hardness. It has been used in sculpture and architecture since Antiquity, in particular to make columns, pavements and coloured draperies in sculpture, because of its colour, which was associated with imperial prestige. Over the following centuries, porphyry lost its imperial symbolism, but retained its image as a rare and precious material and was used purely for decorative purposes.
Until the early 19th century, it was antique porphyry that had already been mined that was reused to make objets d’art, such as vases, after the only deposit in existence at the time was closed down in the 5th century.
