This stunning Madonna with Child oil on canvas painting is approximately from 16th century and could belong to a follower or a circle of Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516, Venice Italy). The colors are very traditional and symbolic: black (dark) background was usually used to draw attention of the viewer towards Mary and Jesus, blue and red colors of the mantel represent, accordingly, Mary’s role as the Queen of Heaven and blood of Christ, symbolizing the crucifixion of Jesus. One can see the signs of so called Sfumato technique, gentle transition of colors, which no doubt takes inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s style (High Renaissance). The stars around Madonna’s and Child’s heads most likely influenced by Byzantian Icons where the image of Virgin Mary with Child has been held in high esteem for many centuries.
Neither repair nor restauration have been made.
