Our English wine cooler dating from the William IV (1830-1837) period is crafted from oak, pollard oak and burr elm and features a hinged top with gadrooned finial, borders with lotus leaf and beaded designs and vessel with prominent gadrooning and recessed brass castors. Apparently unsigned. With an inventory label from the collection of its prior owner.
Pollarding is a type of pruning which promotes a dense head of branches and foliage. A technique dating from medieval times, it was used to keep trees at a set height, but also created burrs (protrusions) that were cut for veneer and admired for their swirling figures of its grain.
