A very nice large-scale William IV pedestal sideboard made of choice mahogany solids and crotch mahogany veneers. The sideboard still retains many of the late Regency tendencies to present large blocked planes of wood and an almost architectural presence to a room. This simple design is accentuated with a considerable selection of woods veneers that are used to differentiate the sections of the sideboard. Note how the crotch mahogany veneers are chosen for the large and dramatic splash and again how the grains run on the drawer fronts. The design runs from center to outer edge and in the case of the drawer fronts even extend around and to the end of the piece. Also, note the complex banding to the splash and the lower section of the display shelf. The entire cabinet is constructed well with large dovetails and the lower bottle drawer is heavily built to accommodate many bottles and the accompanying wear and stress implied. The lower pedestal door fronts are done with an Egyptoid wasting style column giving the whole a classical but monumental appearance.
